I went to Otakon 2007 this past weekend (July 19th to July 22nd) and had a lot of fun. Here's my report which is covered under a LJ Cut due to it's length.

Otakon 20007 Convention Report.

Thursday, July 19th, 2007 (Day 0)

Arrived in downtown Baltimore at 11:45 AM. Stopped by the Marriott Inner Harbor to check in my stuff. Went to the MTA HQ to obtain my replacement MTA disability ID. Spent $5 on the ID. After getting the ID, I walked down Charles Street to Pratt Street and then up Pratt Street to get to the Best Buy to buy a new camera to use over the weekend. Then at around 1:00 PM, went to the Baltimore Convention Center to check out the pre-reg line which was very long. Found the meetup group and talked with them. It rained in a brief downpour near 5:00 PM, line was allowed in a few minutes early. Line moved very quickly, I was able to get my materials within a very short amount of time. Then went out of the BCC and took some pictures, including two very interesting cosplayers, Shego and Kim Possible, was wondering just how in the hell Kim Possible is even remotely linked to anime. Met Jessie and obtained the room key and number from her. Then went to the Edo Sushi meetup and at around 9:00 PM or so, went back to the Marriott Inner Harbor, got my stuff and went to the room and watched some TV until I went to bed.

Friday, July 20th, 2007 (Day 1)

Woke up at 7:44 AM, really cold due to the air conditioning on high all night. Looked at the pocket program guide which is in a "pocket" size unlike last year's guide. Saw that the BCC did not open until 8:30 AM and events do not start until 9:00 AM. Left the hotel room and got to the BCC at around 9:00 AM. Took pictures of cosplayers including Shego and Kim Possible and Stephanie from LazyTown. Went to Video Room 5 and saw the last half of Hello Kitty, very very strange. Then watched an weird anime titled Bastof Syndrome. Rushed to Video Room 1 to check out the Bandai premiere which was awesome. Then checked out the very last part of the Gaia panel and met up with Skittlewolf very briefly after the Gaia panel. Went to the KFC on Howard Street to get some food, went back to the BCC and checked out the video gaming room which had a display for a new Mountain Dew drink being released on August 13th with the name Mountain Dew Gaming Fever. Then at 8:40 PM, I went over to the Powerplant Barnes and Noble for the release of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The Barnes and Noble got very crowded, then at around 12:05 AM, I got my copy and left, noticed a group of Baltimore City police officers right outside of the Barnes and Noble. Went back to the BCC and went to the Friday Night Fan Parodies which was very funny this year. After the fan parodies ended, I went back to the hotel and went to sleep.

Saturday, July 21st, 2007 (Day 2)

Woke up at around 8:25 AM and walked over to the BCC. Walked around reading the new Harry Potter book with people very jealous. Went to the Murakami panel then to the Anime News Network panel. At the Anime News Network panel, I put out a theory that I heard and the staff for Anime News Network partially agreed with me, the theory being that Anime Expo pissed off the anime industry. Then I went to Funimation's One Piece "Panel and Premiere" however at the panel, it was announced that there would be no premiere due to unforeseen circumstances, it was not available at the time. What was discussed at the Q&A session was based around the upcoming 3rd season for TV that Funimation recently obtained rights to. Funimation announced that One Piece will be airing on Toonami with a TV-PG rating which had people disappointed. Then went into editing, Funimation said previous edits that 4Kids made will remain for continuity but they will release a fully uncut and uncensored DVD. Then it was announced that Brina Palencia will be Chopper and Colleen Clinkenbeard will be Luffy and they performed some lines to applause and cheering. Some people asked if Funimation will dub the upcoming One Piece game and future ones, Funimation stated that they can't answer that and told people to contact Bandai Namco. I stayed in the panel room for the Gonzo Romeo and Juliet panel. There was a large audience when 4:00 PM rolled around, but no panelists. 4:05 PM rolls around, no panelists. 4:10 PM rolls around, still no panelists. Then at 4:14 PM, a Otakon staff member comes on stage and announced that due to unforseen scheduling conflicts, the Gonzo Romeo and Juliet panel was cancelled which had many people, including myself, very angry and disappointed. Left the panel room and returned for the Aquarion Premiere Panel. Sat in the very front row very close to the Funimation people!!! Funimation described Aquarion as "robots having orgasms." Funimation also said that the music is done by famed anime composer Yoko Kanno. One voice actress did a line from the anime which had people cheering and whistling. The line was "Oh...it feels so good!!!!" how it was said, seemed like the person was having an orgasm. After that, the first episode premiered and Funimation said Otakon was very lucky to see this because the anime is not scheduled to be released until November and that the first two episodes, the dubbing was not finished until Wednesday night. The first episode came on and it was absolutely spectacular. After the first episode finished, a brief Q&A session started with one person asking if it was weird to do lines in an anime that sounds like a person is having an orgasm and if it was the first time that she needed to do that for an anime. After the Q&A session, the second episode premiered and the panel ended shortly after. After the premiere, I was able to get a picture of the two voice actresses!!!! After that, I went to the Silent Hill panel and it was incredibly awesome. Started with a live performance, continued with discussions about all the Silent Hill games and the movie. Then went to the Saturday Night Fan Parodies which was also very funny. Left the BCC and went back to the hotel to sleep.

Edit: I did attend part of the Saturday AMV contest (the 11:30 AM showing), very awesome, wish I could've seen Friday's but was pre-occupied with waiting for the Harry Potter book. I did vote and did place my ballot into the box.

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007 (3rd day of Otakon) Last day :(

Woke up at around 8:25 AM again and went to the BCC. At 9:00 AM, I went to Panel 4 for the Sailor Moon panel which was awesome and it was stated at the Sailor Moon panel that TokyoPop is currently in negotiations to try to bring the Sailor Moon manga back to America. Then I went to the Ryhuei Kitamura Panel in which Kitamura stated that he finished a major Hollywood project with famed author Clive Barker titled Midnight Meat Train which was adapted from a book. Then he complained about Hollywood and, in his perspective, the only thing that Hollywood cares about is making money with sequel after sequel, remake after remake and that most movies that are coming out now are "shit movies." I was chosen for a question and the question I asked was "For adapting properties such as books, what is your personal opinion, do you take very importantly, fan and fan feedback?" and he basically stated that fans and fan feedback is very important to him and he takes all fan feedback into consideration for any project he does. He said fans can contact him and tell him if he's losing touch with the fans. Then I went to the Eminence concert which ran over quite a bit. Very very awesome concert. After the concert, I went to the autograph session and got their autographs. Then I walked over to the part of the 200 level that's near the skywalk exit/entrance and noticed people pointing and I looked and saw that someone had taped "Awesome" and some sort of symbol on the window that's only accessable via roof. I joined in with the pointing and many people took pictures of the window, including Otakon staff. One Otakon staff member said that if Otakon catches whoever did that, they will be banned from Otakon for 3 years and may face criminal charges from the Baltimore Convention Center. Then I left at around 3:00 PM for the year.

I heard that Otakon 2008 will be August 8-10, the last time Otakon fell on that date is 2003 and I am definatly going to go next year.
